A Framework for Sustainability
Values-based Education for Sustainable Development (VbESD) is a framework developed by Vicky Huang, Alessandro Pagano and Agostino Marengo.
It provides a sustainability focus on the traditional VbE pillars and extends them into an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) context, with the goal to foster sustainability explicitly and holistically as an intrinsic value.
The VbESD Pillars
Pillar 1: Explicit sustainability modelling
Pillar 2: A base for the Inner Curriculum to navigate the outer world
Pillar 3: Reflection on connection with nature and sustainability
Pillar 4: An Atmosphere and Ethos sympathetic to learning from and living in harmony with nature
Pillar 5: A Curriculum for Sustainability
Pillar 6: Leadership encompassing sustainable living
Pillar 7: An Ethical Vocabulary that provides students with a common language relating to sustainability and sustainable development
Pillar 8: Sustainable School Operations encompasses systemic institutional sustainability throughout the whole school and all its activities.
